At GEM, sustainability is embedded across the Global MBA experience: empowering students to become responsible leaders in a rapidly changing world.
As sustainability becomes a defining priority for businesses worldwide, professionals are increasingly seeking programs that combine managerial expertise with social and environmental impact.
Embedding sustainability in the MBA curriculum
At GEM, sustainability is integrated throughout the MBA program. This commitment goes beyond dedicated modules, impacting the entire curriculum from risk management to investment strategies. “Sustainability is ingrained into the DNA of the school,” explains Professor Lea Stadtler, Associate Professor of Strategic Management at GEM. “We’ve developed sustainability learning goals that are tracked across modules. These are not just limited to sustainability courses - they’re also addressed in core classes like risk management, legal affairs, and investment strategies.”
With a curriculum rooted in critical thinking, systems analysis, and collaboration, the GEM MBA helps participants rethink the role of business in society and the practical impact of responsible leadership.
Building sustainability and leadership skills
The GEM MBA equips students with the competencies needed to drive change within global organizations. Courses and projects strengthen collaboration, communication, and leadership - the core foundations for managing transformation in sustainability contexts.
“Understanding how organizations work is key for anyone who wants to work on sustainability,” says Professor Stadtler. “An MBA that takes a broad, strategic approach encourages understanding of how to lead change and adopt frameworks for sustainable transformation.”
GEM MBA candidate Anil Kumar Gogu, originally from India, experienced this firsthand: “Before coming to GEM, I didn’t know much about sustainability. Studying the MBA in France helped me understand not only management fundamentals but also how to embed sustainability into real business contexts.”
Learning by doing: sustainability in action
Experiential learning is central to the GEM MBA. Students apply theory through real-world projects, internships, and competitions. One highlight is the **Green Seed Journey**, a green investment challenge led by EIT InnoEnergy. Competing with other leading European business schools, GEM MBA students took first place by evaluating 26 innovative startups using the tools and frameworks acquired in class.
“Everything we learned - marketing, business models, financial projections - came together during that competition,” says Anil.
Shaping careers with sustainable impact
Through hands-on experience, international collaboration, and an integrated curriculum, the GEM MBA prepares graduates to lead with purpose. Whether pursuing roles in ESG leadership, sustainable investment, or corporate innovation, GEM MBA alumni graduate ready to transform business for a more sustainable future.
