Edward Elgar Publishing Ed. Cheltenham: Edward Elgar PublishingRecent literature has highlighted the role of recurrent events in shaping emerging organizational fields. However, the focus in recent work on successful field configuration overlooks the frequent failure of events to configure nascent fields. This chapter studies field configuration failure based on a ten-year longitudinal case study of Forum Blanc, an annual professional event set up in 2009 to address the challenges of digital technology and audiovisual content creation. We analyse the evolution of Forum Blanc over time and discuss the role of participation, identity boundaries and category dynamics in the event’s inability to produce institutional innovation and change.
