Pedagogy as a Strategic Lever for Major Transitions

Pedagogy is a strategic tool to address economic, ecological, and social transitions. Our programs are designed to train change-makers who can act in complex environments through a transdisciplinary, immersive, and engaged approach.

A Pedagogy Aligned with Our Purpose

All GEM programs now integrate sustainability, ethics, and social responsibility issues. This pedagogy includes:

  • Dedicated modules on ecological and social transition, such as ST101, a common course for all students that introduces the fundamentals of ecological and social transitions through case studies and immersive scenarios (VR/AI).
  • Integration of DD&RS competencies into learning. Developed nationally with GEM’s contribution, this framework is fully embedded in all degree programs and Specialized Master’s programs.
  • Immersive learning experiences connected to local territories, businesses, and innovation labs.

The Learning Journey: Experiential Education

Our 60/20/20 model reflects our vision of learning:

  • 60% in-person, in small groups
  • 20% enhanced virtual learning (augmented reality, generative AI)
  • 20% outside the classroom: alpine expeditions, field projects, collaborative workshops

Each student is supported by a digital Learning Journal, a personal tool that captures their learning, reflections, and outputs throughout their journey. This journal encourages students to reflect on the impact of their choices, projects, and commitments. By cultivating this reflective mindset, students are empowered to become change agents who connect their learning to real-world social, environmental, and economic transformation challenges.

Sustainability Olympics

Sustainability Olympics

A unique GEM-specific initiative, the Sustainability Olympiads are organized each year during a dedicated period. They offer a wide range of activities — from short sessions to more indepth formats — to explore key sustainability challenges: workshops, serious games, MOOCs, conferences, collaborative “Fresk” sessions, and more. Open to students, staff, and alumni, the Olympiads award digital badges that recognize participants’ engagement and the skills they develop around ecological and societal transitions.
