Should we be worried?Strategic Direction , 32, 6: 2-4Despite some stagnant economies in the past few years, corporations are certainly not lacking in their ambition for growth. However, many of these have become increasingly reliant on mergers and acquisitions (M&As) rather than through organic means. Examples of recent M&As’ deals include Pfizer & Allergan ($191bn), Shell & BG Group ($81bn), Charter & Time Warner Cable ($78bn) and Lafarge & Holcim ($41bn). The last barometer of Ernst & Young (EY, 2015), published in October 2015, shows that 59 per cent of the companies were planning to go on with an acquisition during the following year. According to Thomson Reuters, in France alone, the market of M&As grew by 153 per cent during the first quarter of 2014 compared to the first quarter of 2013. For the whole year of 2014, the deals reached a value of $83,595.5m. (Thomson Reuteurs, 2014).
