I completed my DBA in 2017, my thesis being “An analysis of Global Economic Linkages and Transmission of Risk within the US Growth and Value Equity Portfolios: A financial, economic, and accounting perspective."
I would say the impact of DBA has been quite strong and pervasive in my world. I believe the doctoral journey changes your overall perspective on things. After completing DBA, I found myself looking at things from a holistic point of view. I can also say that I have become more analytical.
If I were to say one thing that is ubiquitous in the post-DBA world, that theme would certainly have to do with making a stronger IMPACT in the society. The DBA equips a person with tools with which one can make an impact through the endeavors undertaken (big and small, both). Be it through research, practice, or teaching, the drive to make an impact continues to grow for me.
One wouldn’t need to argue much to defend that the goal of research is to make impact. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with my esteemed supervisor and several colleagues to collaborate and publish research in quality journals.
The process of getting published in a peer-reviewed journal undoubtedly prepares you to embrace this concept of taking an impact. My research has primarily been in the areas of international finance and corporate finance, and currently, I’m exploring an interesting field of research that intersects behavioral finance and technology adoption of alternate currencies.
These works are continuously making impact in the industry through a wide audience (both academicians and practitioners) who read your work and take it further by extending the research, or by implementing into practice in the industry.
Your novel contributions definitely pave the road in making an impact.
I’ve also been fortunate to be involved in the area of community and Economic development in our region. My current position connects the work of our Business School with the regional community through various programs related to professional development, corporate training, and executive education.
The journey of DBA has positioned me with a widened perspective of things that allows me to carefully analyze different projects. The goal would then be to embark on projects while carving them innovatively to make a strong and meaningful impact in the field of community and economic development.
Lastly, I teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including executives. While teaching, the concept of impact just multiplies! While you are making an impact on students’ way of thinking and delivering innovative ways of knowledge transfer, you are also preparing them to make an impact further into society and their current or future industry of work. Our role is very important as teachers, as we have a huge potential to make a difference in students’ learning process, and eventually shape a better future together.
Finally, I believe impact and drive for innovation provide great synergies for each other. For one to make an impact in society, one has to continuously strive to be innovative. In order to make an impact, an innovative mindset will be extremely useful; and in order to be innovative, one has to have a mindset to make an impact. DBA is the key to that door that says, “Welcome! Enter here and make an impact in your society and the world!”
